Another Earth (2011)

Just what is it about indie science fiction that is so fascinating? Maybe it’s the idea that great effects are done on a small budget. Or maybe it’s the simple fact that it’s indie filmmaking. Regardless of pretense or the filmmaker’s confinements, indie movies of the “lesser” genres (action, horror, sci-fi, etc.) almost always impress, Another Earth being no exception to this general rule.

Another Earth marks a marvelous turn that most sci-fi movie writers are too scared to take, and that is into the realm of a character drama. Mike Cahill’s thought-provoking debut as director (and writer and cinematographer and editor) is a risky venture, but it almost always works. Unfortunately, Cahill has concocted a premise that is too interesting for his small, pensive movie, but the beautiful Brit Marling makes it possible to ignore most of the film’s most glaring issues as she sweeps the audience away with her acting.

It’s best to go into Another Earth without any outside knowledge, but if you’ve come to this page, you probably know too much already. Here is your chance to leave before I begin with story details…

Another Earth is centered around Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling), an MIT student who becomes frenzied after she finds out that scientists have discovered a planet nicknamed Earth 2. Earth 2 is the same in composition as our earth, however the problem is that Earth 2 has suddenly moved from behind the sun and into view in our night sky. Rhoda drunkenly leaves a party and drives away, only to accidentally hit another family’s car while she is stargazing. The mother and child are killed; the father (William Mapother), on the other hand, is left in a coma. Four years later, Rhoda is released from jail and the father awakens from his coma. It’s up to Rhoda to find the courage to apologize and right what she has done wrong.

Visually, Another Earth is an impressive film. There’s a constant reminder that the film is independent–Cahill is forced to rely on grainy hand-held shots for some of the film’s most beautiful moments–and yet it’s very well-done for a film that supposedly cost $150,000 to make. Cahill returns to his roots in filming sharks and jellyfish for National Geographic by giving the human form a feeling of mystique. There are quite a few shots of Rhoda walking in slow-motion, Earth 2 looming in the background. But it’s all worth it: the viewer is constantly introduced to the world’s cruelty and ugliness, but Cahill has somehow made it serene and strangely inviting.

Whether or not Another Earth could have possibly held together without great actors is something that should be called into question. Brit Marling gives the performance that every actress wants to give. She adds a seemingly impossible amount of depth to the character of Rhoda. We feel her pain constantly, and it’s all thanks to Marling. Marling is worthy of a Best Actress nomination for her work in Another Earth. Although William Mapother is not to be ignored either. Maybe you’ve seen him on “Lost” when he played Ethan, however here, he doesn’t play a baddie. He’s honest and human in his slice-of-life performance.

Another Earth isn’t perfect, in fact, it’s far from it. The interesting ideas of two earths, a whole new you, and fear of doppelgangers is underused, if not absent entirely. The ending is, without a doubt, science fiction at its best, however it’s really the only scene in the movie that is pure sci-fi. The ending could be a “twist,” but I’m not going to call it that because the ending is just as subtle as the rest of the movie. Nevertheless, it packs a punch. Cahill should feature the same premise in his next film, but this time, he should entertain all the special effects that everyone wanted to see in this one.

At the Sundance Film Festival this year, Another Earth won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize, an award given to the film that best portrays a sci-fi story. There may not have been many movies at Sundance that could have qualified, but there’s no question that Another Earth deserved. Cahill’s first movie is quiet, well-made, and has the makings of an indie classic. Brit Marling and William Mapother’s chemistry perfectly fits Cahill’s excellent script, causing the audience to ponder “What if…?” for the entire movie. It’s mystifying science fiction, the kind without explosions and the kind without little green men. And Cahill proves that this, this lo-fi, destructive, and emotionally tense meditation, may be the best kind of science fiction.

Attack the Block (2011)

Attack the Block continues 2011 of aliens on Earth, starting with Battle: Los Angles and Paul and with Cowboys and Aliens and Super 8.

On Guy Fawkes Night in a council estate in South London our gang of teenage protagonists lead by Moses (John Boyega) bravely mug our heroine, newly qualified nurse Sam (Jodie Whittaker) when a alien clashes down to Earth. Their natural response is to kick the living s**t out of it and celebrate their triumph. But more aliens start to land on Earth, large, hairy, pitch black beasts with grow in the dark teeth. With the aliens gathering on the estate the gang have to tool themselves up to fight this deadly menace.

Attack the Block is another send up of typically American genres by Big Talk Productions, the company that made Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. For me it is great to see that alien do invade outside the USA. Attack the Block is a very competent debut by Joe Cornish who combines a witty script with lots of action and horror in an 88 minute package. There was a certain B-Movie clarm to film, a little like John Carpenter with characters grabbing whatever they can for weapons, including a katana, the way the score sounds and even the font for the title. For horror fans there is plenty of violence and gore to keep you happy and the aliens are effective monsters with their long black hair and glowing teeth. Cornish needs to be praised for using as little CGI as possible.

Comedy veteran Nick Frost provides the most laughs as a drug dealer who shall a little apathetic to the situation. Most of the actors are good and believable, many of them being unprofessional youngsters. The dialogue felt like it was improvised and makes the characters sound more natural and funny. Boyega certainly has a lot of potential and I hope he sticks to acting.

There is however a tonal shift in the film, from a light-hearted affair to something more serious as the film moved on. Attack the Block is funny but it needed to spread its humour more evenly. There are some running gags through the film, some working better then others. The little kids who want to be hard-men are funny as they try to be like the gang, but the middle-class university student played by Luke Treadaway, becoming annoying: possibly because I found him too stereotypical.

Overall, this is the best alien based comedy starring Nick Frost this year.

Mars Needs Moms (2011)

There’s animation and then there’s the animation based on motion capturing, which had seen the likes of films such as The Polar Express and the recent A Christmas Carol. For personal reasons I don’t quite dig this particular brand of art, straddling neither here nor there with its desire to be photo realistic, yet tinged with that hint of exaggerated elements that can only be made through the animated medium rather than live action. Then again if the artwork didn’t impress, the story did for a bit, with a surprisingly strong emotional core attached to it that many can identify with, especially if we had been mean to our own moms before.

Mars needs moms, only because the Martians themselves are so bad at parenting and want to outsource this function, given a shift in ideology no thanks to a mean matriarch at the helm of their society, buried deep beneath the surface such that our Pathfinder is rather useless at detecting lifeforms. As Mars doesn’t have the necessary support environment, Moms get kidnapped from Earth, sent back to Mars, have their parenting DNA sucked out of their beings, implanted into Nannybots, before being obliterated in the process which involves the sun – yes Martians are environmental friendly and use renewable solar energy.

The next mom on the Martian’s target is Milo’s mom (Joan Cusack), who impressed through their deep space surveillance camera with her ability to keep the naughty Milo (Seth Green) under control from taking out the trash to sending him to his room for not eating his veggies. Some hurtful exchange of words from son to mother, before he discovers the Martian’s ploy and made himself a stowaway on a spaceship back to Mars, where he turns from prisoner to rescuer with the help of a perpetually high Gribble (Dan Fogler), who teaches him a thing or two about survival on the red planet, wanting Max to become his BFF if not for the latter’s insistence to save his mom.

So begins a quick adventure of about an hour with an audacious rescue mission to exploit its 3D-ness (watching this on 2D, there weren’t many sequences designed to do that, really), also with the help of convenient online, realtime translator sets the humans use to communicate with their Martian helper in Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), a somewhat non-conformist female Martian being influenced by the Flower Power propaganda the Martians have while researching Earth, graffiti painting the dull look of Mars with psychedelic colours.

An unnecessary subplot occurs with the romantic dalliances between Martian and Man (really, eww), as well as some commentary about nature versus nurture with the male martians not being cared for by Moms and becoming more like Apes when left to their own devices when forced away from civilizations – there are two layers here, one being the females ruling the world, with the male species through the lack of nurturing going back to their primal selves.

Still, what made this film bearable for the most parts is the emotional core of the story stemming from Milo’s regret in saying what could possibly be the meanest comment anyone can make toward their moms, which intensified his sense of urgency and regret as he races against the clock to save his her.

You’ll be hard pressed not to tear up (oh the manipulation, Disney), though the insult to intelligence if you’re older than 5 years come from the final act, involving the lack of breathable air which I thought on one hand was brave of Disney to attempt something a little bit more shocking as is, but on the other pulled its punches with what was very implausible, that robbed it of its credibility.

The only aspect which impressed was the sheer amount of work going on behind the motion capture, where you can see plenty of behind the scenes effort when the end credits were rolling, where the actors are strapped to multiple sensors of all kinds placed on their bodies while they act out their scenes made up of sparse looking, makeshift sets that double up for the real thing. Some nice touches also involved the first person perspective when the Martians speak, where we get to hear both Martian and English language tracks simultaneously as if we have put on the translating device ourselves.
